Bosse & Baum Gallery #MAF2016
Bosse & Baum is a gallery based in London. It is run by Lana Bountakidou and Alexandra Warder. They run the gallery
together, just the two of them.
Is it your first time
exhibiting in Mexico?
Yes, first time at the Material Art Fair (MAF) and first time in
Mexico. And it is the first time our artist, Cibelle Cavalli Bastos, is showing
in Mexico. So firsts for everyone.
Can you tell us about your
experience exhibiting in Mexico?
It’s been amazing. The work has gone down very well. We have lots of
positive feedback from artists, curators, collectors, and the general public. They
have been lots of people taking photographs. We’ve made sales. We got some press,
a nice article in Art space. It’s been much better than I thought it would be. We
would definitely like to come back to Mexico and do a solo show with our
artist.
Do you find Mexicans and
Brits like different things in terms of art?
It’s my first time here, so I can’t say exactly. We tried to use
work that would fit contextually, so the materials that the artist has used you
can find in Mexico City, people have liked that and recognized that, so that’s
a very positive thing. From what I saw at the art fairs and museums here, yes, there
is a difference. Everything seems quite muted and monochrome, not in MAF
though. But I think that’s good, every country should have its own taste and
exhibit artists of their own nationality and promote them, that’s natural.
What are the differences
between the art that’s shown in Mexico and Britain?
The artists that they show here, many of them are not seen in the UK.
Although, it’s interesting that Jumex Museum’s exhibition Under the Sun, about
Latin American art, is coming to London, to the South London Gallery in July,
very close to where our gallery is, so that’s a very positive exchange. So I
hope there’s more of that kind of thing. A lot of Mexicans travel abroad and
see artwork. They get to see a lot more, but abroad, it would be nice if it
came to Mexico as well.
